Messina is the largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean Sea, just a few kilometers from the Italian mainland and 38 nautical miles from Portorosa, it sits on a curved harbour at the northernmost point of Sicily's Ionian Coast. For centuries it has been a major transport hub and today it is an important gateway to and from the island through the Strait of Messina. The city center offers wide boulevards and elegant turn-of-the-century buildings, here is also one of Sicily's finest cathedrals. Messina is also known for the swordfish based dishes celebrated by gourmets across the island. Historical monuments are thin on the ground, the result of a devastating earthquake in 1908 and a mass bombing in WWII. Ganzirri is the perfect place to eat typical seafood dishes. There are farms here and around the lakes of the Nature Reserve, where it is possible to taste the typical cuisine.
